Unemployment in California

Nov. 10th, 2009 | 11:08 am
posted by: fragglefemme in hip_domestics

I have a question about Unemployment in California and I can't find the answers online anywhere and I can't get through to Unemployment. I thought I'd try this. Maybe someone has a clue :)

I'm currently unemployed. IF someone were to offer me a job and I didn't take it, would that mean I couldn't get my unemployment anymore? Are there stipulations about this? For example, if I was offered a job that paid really low, less than what I get on unemployment, or if I was offered a part-time job or if it was a certain distance away from my house (far) would those make it okay to not accept and still get unemployment? What about if I was offered a job, countered with a higher offer and they didn't accept my offer, would that mean that I declined the work or that they took back their offer? I'm just not clear on these types of things :)

Thanks!

Wedding Attendant Gifts: I need ideas!

So, I think for my gifts to my girls in the wedding party, I’m going to get tote bags and have my mom embroider their names or monograms or something on them.

Bags like these: http://www.amazon.com/NEW-Port-Company-Bi-Color-Pink-OSFA/dp/B000XMTL96/ref=sr_1_29?ie=UTF8&s=apparel&qid=1257864886&sr=1-29

Anyway, I need ideas on what all to fill them up with.  I was thinking little things like a notepad and pen, fuzzy socks/slippers or flip-flops (or both), some chapstick, a little sewing kit, some of those little one size fits all gloves (at least for my cousin Amy, because I know she’ll be cold!), and stuff like that.  Does anyone else have any other ideas for little things?

Thanks,
Tisha

ETA:  Just to clarify, this is NOT going to be the only gift I’m giving them.  It will probably be given to them a couple of months in advance, and I plan on getting them jewelry or a pendent or something.  Some people have been saying that I shouldn’t get them something that is just to help me, so I wanted to make sure you all know it isn’t like that.  :-)

possible nesting

We're turning our office/craft room into our son's nursery.
Im having issues with what I want to do with it. I want to paint over the wall I painted in the early weeks of pregnancy.
I have about a half a quart of canary yellow paint and I plan to buy a dark espresso brown.
My ideas...

brown wall with random swirls and wavy horizontal lines that are yellow.
or.
brown wall with yellow silhouettes of the city of London (since his name will be London)
or.
brown wall with yellow outline of a city silhouette filled in with sponge inprints or little polka dots
or
any other suggestions?

Slippery ramp

Nov. 10th, 2009 | 09:34 am
posted by: tudorpot in hip_domestics

I have a 28 foot long wooden ramp from my front door to the driveway. This was built for my father so he could use his walker/scooter. Otherwise there would have been a lot of stairs, the ramp is also important for bringing in loads of firewood for the woodstove. It works well most of the time, but it gets slippery even when it's not icy and I have had a few falls. I'm looking for suggestions on what to do to make it safer- where I live we have lots of snow and ice in the winter. I have been scattering wood ash if it's icy, and I obviously shovel the snow.
I am considering indoor-outdoor carpet.

ETA- after a very wet warm season-- it was not really summer this year- I didn't get to do the textured paint/sand thing. I am looking for something else- too cold to paint now. Also, looking for personal experiences- what worked.

I'm a newly pregnant person...6 weeks today. I'm already super achey all over, tired, and now having insomnia! I'm shocked at how miserable I feel already and I'm sure this is only the tip of the iceberg. Please tell me it gets better. I mean really, insomnia at 6 weeks? I feel like I need to quit my job now so I can get rest whenever possible. :D At least I'm not having morning sickness. *knock on wood*

I of course have been taking prenatal vitamins. This last week there was two day I forgot to take them. Those two days I actually slept through the night on both nights. I remembered to take my prenatal vitamin after the two days missed and was nauseas all day, night, and through the night. So yesterday I didn't take my vitamin and guess what? I slept through the night and felt awesome all day long. I took my vitamin about two hours ago and I feel nauseas. I feel like total trash right now. I'm starting to think the prenatal vitamins are making me sick. I have a doctors apointment tomorrow and I will be bringing this up with her. Anyone else have any thoughts or have experience with prenantal vitamins making you sick?

Thanks in advance.

I am NOT weird!

So my boyfriend thinks I've completely lost my mind. I spend a moderate amount of my time on the internet looking at pregnant bellies, watching birthing/baby belly videos, reading about pregnancy and newborns, and trolling this community. He constantly comments on it and thinks I'm obsessive and weird. That it's OK to "look around once or twice, but not EVERY DAY!" I think I'm just curious and interested and that this is a GOOD thing. I want to know everything I can and to make the most educated decisions that I can about my pregnancy, labor, birth, and then my newborn. So tell me how much time you spend on pregnancy-related sites compared to other websites. I think my interest is perfectly healthy and that he should be happy that I'm interested in learning and knowing! Ugh.

I havent breastfed my son in 4 months because of not being able to do it (meds, not producing milk, etc.) and well, MY RIGHT NIPPLE IS LACTATING. I'M LEAKING.
I am currently on depo, and there is probably a million in one chance i am pregnant (We use condoms every single time and of course the depo).
Is this uncommon or what?
this is so weird and how do I make it stop?

I feel super-blah...in general...I am pretty tired of being sick and my productivity at work sucks (yes, at 32 weeks, still sick....as I know many of us are...which almost makes me feel better),  too tired for a complete rant...so I will stop

anyways, just got back from a doctor's appointment and the dr. indicated that my baby is absurdly high and is thus causing ridiculous amounts of rib pain, especially on  the right side...I can't even eat at times...

anyone else with a super high baby?

Xposted...sorry

First, we're renting. Since we don't own this place so I can't do major renovations or anything.

There are these...vents around the trailer. There are 4 of them total. Each of are dug out and has a metal boarder around it and they each have a board standing up in them. (see pics)

1) What are they for?

2) It's COLD!! Can I put a piece of insulation down there to keep cold air from coming up under the house or is that going to cause a problem with ventilation?

modifying a recipe

i need help from some of you more experienced chefs.

i want to make shrimp scampi for dinner, but i've over estimated the amount of shrimp i have (i have about half of what i need). would it be win to add some bacon too? i've had a really good pasta dish before that had bacon and shrimp in it but i don't know if the other ingredients would make the flavors clash too much... if i were to add bacon is there anything i should omit or cut down on?

i also have some sun-dried tomatoes i may add.

here's the recipe in question for the linkaphobes:

* 1 (8 ounce) package angel hair pasta
* 1/2 cup butter
* 4 cloves minced garlic
* 1 pound shrimp, peeled and deveined
* 1 cup dry white wine
* 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
* 3/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
* 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley

Directions

1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Stir in pasta and return pot to boil. Cook until al dente. Drain well.
2. Melt butter in a large saucepan over medium heat. Stir in garlic and shrimp. Cook, stirring constantly, for 3 to 5 minutes.
3. Stir in wine and pepper. Bring to a boil and cook for 30 seconds while stirring constantly.
4. Mix shrimp with drained pasta in a serving bowl. Sprinkle with cheese and parsley. Serve immediately.

thanks in advance!!! :)

Finding out the gender

Nov. 9th, 2009 | 11:08 am
posted by: aloha_moira in pregnant

I'm about 11 weeks along and my next appointment is scheduled for around 15 weeks. My OB is pretty u/s happy and I'm sure I'll get a scan then... think we'll be able to tell the gender at that point or is it still too early? What's the soonest anyone has found out what team they're on? I don't care either way but I am kind of impatient and would love to know as soon as I can. :) If it makes any difference, the machine she uses seems to have pretty good resolution, although I've only had trans-vaginal u/s so far so I can't comment on the quality of the abdominal scans.

getting gasoline smell out of a feather bed

Nov. 9th, 2009 | 12:25 pm
posted by: wasabirobot in hip_domestics

I have a king-sized feather bed that got a small gasoline spill on it while it was being transported in my car. The spot is an oval that is perhaps 4 inches wide and 2 inches tall. I don't think that gas really soaked through the cover into the feathers. However, the smell is pretty strong. Any tips for something I can buy or a household product I could use to lift out the smell? I haven't tried anything yet because I didn't want to make it worse. I'm trying to avoid needing to dry-clean it because that will likely cost more than the feather bed did in the first place ;)  Thanks in advance for any tips.

Latching on during breastfeeding...

Nov. 9th, 2009 | 11:28 am
posted by: politicking in pregnant

My daughter was born last Friday... she latches onto my breast, but not properly. Sometimes when she does latch on the right way, she pushes until she just has the nipple again. Often, though, it's as if she doesn't open her mouth wide enough to fit as much of the areola in there as neds to be.

Now, this has led to me having sore nipples (which I expected for the first few weeks anyway), one of them began bleeding, and to her screaming and having a fit, while I cry because I'm so frustrated and feel awful that I can't get her to latch on :(

I have went onto kellymom.com and such websites trying to figure out what to do, but I was wondering if anyone had any personal experience with this type of thing.
